A patent application relating to the Apple Watch is leading some to speculate that the company may be working on a mode where the screen is always on. This has been a much-requested feature from some, but it would pose two challenges … The obvious one is battery-life. Depending on model and usage patterns, the Apple Watch can comfortably make it through anything from one very long day to several days – but that’s with the screen on for relatively short periods of time....

A teardown of the Apple Watch Series 5 yesterday revealed that the internals are mostly the same as the Series 4. iFixit has now given the 40mm Apple Watch Series 5 the teardown treatment, and it turns out that it houses some major battery changes compared to last year’s model. According to the teardown, the 40mm Apple Watch Series 5 features a new battery design with a new metal casing, likely made out of aluminum....

As we await the release of Apple’s first quarter earnings tomorrow, some of the company’s suppliers are offering a peak at what we might see. As Bloomberg notes, both Qualcomm and Broadcom implied during their own respective earnings announcements that iPhone orders are slowing down more than normal for this time of year… Qualcomm said during its earnings release today that “orders from a large, thin modem customer” have decreased at a worse level than usual for this time of the year....

Apple, after unveiling a new Shopping category last week, appears to have now made more enhancements to the App Store. According to a report out of TechCrunch, Apple has improved its search algorithms to return more relevant and intelligent results when a keyword search is performed. The change in algorithms appears to have begun on November 3rd, with the most notable changes being noticed yesterday and today. While Apple in the past has focused most on algorithms for the Top Free, Paid, and Grossing apps, these changes affect how apps are returned when a user performs a search....

Apple today announced to developers some upcoming App Store pricing changes in Japan as a result of higher taxes in the country. According to the company in a post to Apple’s Developer website, starting in October 2019, the Japan Consumption Tax (JCT) will increase from 8% to 10%. This will make apps and in-app purchases available on the App Store more expensive for Japanese customers, except for auto-renewable subscriptions. Despite that, the increase in prices will be minimal....

M.I.C. Gadget points to some apparent iPhone 4 prototypes on the chinese “grey market” with 64 GB storage capacities. The images could technically be easily faked but the “XX” on the back of the device’s do help represent the units as potential Apple prototypes. If real and not hacked, this 64 GB iPhone 4 most likely represents a storage capacity that Apple decided to abandon for their 4th generation iPhone rather than an upcoming model....

Reports are coming in that the AppleTV might have a very subtle skipping problem when playing video streams (which is all it does now). It’s not one that most people would catch, but for some with a trained eye, it is noticeable and annoying. A few discussions are going on about it and it appears to be related to Apple’s streaming. Seems like something that will be addressed in an upcoming update....

Apple and Tim Cook have spoken out about the company’s efforts to protect DACA employees in the past, and now it is taking another stance. According to Axios, Apple is among long list of companies who today have signed a brief in support of legally challenging Trump’s efforts to end DACA. Alongside Apple, companies such as Twitter, Google, Microsoft, IMB, and Lyft have expressed their support for for the challenge. The companies are backing an effort from several state Attorneys General that seeks an injunction to keep the federal government from ending the DACA program....

Update for Apple TV The latest update for Apple TV supports iOS 10 and was officially released earlier this week on Tuesday. To update your box manually, go to Settings > System > Software Updates and select Update Software. Or, turn on Automatic Updates and then you won’t need to remember to do it. The new TV OS includes some interesting new features including support for more third-party apps, “Memories” which is an automated collection of photos based on date and location....

AppleCare employees today received a new build of the upcoming OS X Mavericks 10.9.3, according to sources. The build number is 13D62, which indicates a jump from the previous AppleCare seed of 13D59. The current beta for developers is 13D55… We reported on the release notes of improved 4K display support and syncing functionality last week, and today’s build lacks the commonplace “PRE-RELEASE” labeling, and this indicates that 10.9.3’s release is imminent....

According to a new report from The Information, Apple has hired away Jessie Henderson from WarnerMedia as the company looks to expand its investment in original film production. The new hire will join the Apple Original Films division as Apple looks to expand the number of films it produces. The report say that Apple is raising up its production target for TV+ movies, increasing from the original expectation of 10-12 per year...

While users in the US are today getting access to CBS Sports and USA Now on the Apple TV, Canadian users are being greeted today with two new channels from the big Canadian cable companies. Bell’s CraveTV and Rogers’ Shomi, two competitive on-demand TV services akin to Hulu in the US, are now accessible on Apple’s set-top box. Bell made an official announcement today noting that the Apple TV app provides access to the entire CraveTV library for subscribers including popular shows HOMELAND, NURSE JACKIE, WEEDS, HAPPYISH, BOSCH, THE WIRE, SEINFELD, and more....

There are a few snippets of AppleTV related news popping up today. The first we take with the usual grain of salt as it comes to us from the often unreliable DigiTimes. The publication has been reporting some more believable stories as of late, but today’s rumor of Apple purchasing 55 and 65-inch Ultra HD TV panels from LG seems to be more rumor than anything else. Apple has of course been rumored several times to be building a full fledged HDTV to go along with the much expected revamped AppleTV service coming in the the near future....

According to iLounge, Tony Fadell – a former Apple Senior Vice President – will soon find another place to sell his new Nest Learning Thermostats: the Apple Store. According to the report, the Nest will run for $249 at the Apple Store (the same as Nest’s price through Nest’s online store). Apple subsidiary FileMaker Inc., just announced they shipped over 1 million units of Bento, their personal database tool currently available for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Originally released in 2008, Bento is now available in seven languages with dedicated clients for iPhone and iPad ($4.99) that sync with Bento for Mac currently available on the Mac App Store for $49.99. A number of Apple patents and applications have been published today, one of which details an interesting new design for the packaging of iOS devices that would also double as a stand or dock of sorts. The patent application was originally filed in May 2011, but it was published today by the United States Patent and Trademark Office and detailed by PatentlyApple. The image above is pretty self-explanatory, showing iPod nano-like packaging with a removable lid and base that transform into a dock or stand for the device....
