Apple released bug fix updates to apps in its iWork suite for both iOS and macOS. The new versions include new iPad keyboard improvements for Numbers on iOS. Today’s release follows a more feature-packed release last month (that happened to include a few bugs on Numbers for iOS that caused some negative App Store reviews). Following the announcement of the Apple Music Christmas deal, it seems that Apple has decided to offer more gifts for its users. From December 24 to 29, the company will have a daily surprise on the App Store. Although more details aren’t known, these gifts will likely be some paid apps and games. The campaign has already appeared in Today’s App Store tab for some users in Australia and other Asian countries, but the surprise is not yet available....

Apple has won the last of six patent infringement claims filed by Motorola, after the US International Trade Commission agreed with Apple that the patent was invalid for ‘lack of novelty’, aka being too obvious. When you lift your iPhone to your face to make or receive a call, the touchscreen is disabled to prevent accidental input. Motorola claimed to have patented this approach, Apple argued that it was an obvious thing to do and the USITC has agreed with them....

In addition to the release of OS X 10.9.3 alongside updates to iTunes and iTunes Connect, Apple today released version 2.1 of its Podcasts app for iPhone and iPad. Apple has announced that it will soon support accessing digital health records for veterans through the Health app on iPhone. The development is part of a new agreement with the US Department of Veterans. Health record-sharing supports easily and securely viewing official “immunizations, lab results, medications, and vitals” from your healthcare provider all in one place on the iPhone. Apple says health records are secured through encryption and accessible only with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID (fingerprint or facial recognition)....

As we approach World AIDS Day in December, Apple today has unveiled new (PRODUCT)RED color variants for the Beats Pill+ and Beats Solo3 headphones. Specifically, Apple is calling the red color “Citrus Red.” The new color options aren’t available just yet, but are currently listed as “coming soon” on Apple’s website. The price points for the (RED) offerings are the same as the normal color variants. The Beats Pill+ in the “Citrus Red” choice comes in at $229....

The Billie Holiday Theatre recently recorded a new version of their critically acclaimed work ’12 Angry Mend … And Women; The Weight of the Wait’ at Apple’s Steve Jobs Theater. Apple is streaming the play for free for four weeks through the Apple TV app. Featuring stories from the critically acclaimed book 12 Angry Men: True Stories of Being a Black Man in America Today, the film explores narratives of unjust racial profiling and police action....

If you wanted to get your hands on something (partly) designed by Marc Newson, the Apple Watch is probably the cheapest option out there. Even the $17,000 top-of-the-range Edition model might look a little more reasonable after learning that a Newson-designed lounge chair just sold at a London auction for $3.7M. Now that Android Wear is officially compatible with iOS devices there’s a lot more smartwatch love to go around, at least for Apple fans. Android users have had a taste of the first generation, but Motorola’s new Moto 360 is one of the many new options available for both sides for the fence. Last week at Apple’s yearly briefing for accessory makers in its Made-for-iPhone/iPad (MFi) licensing program, the company unveiled new Lightning connectors and specs for Lightning receptacles that will soon be available for implementation in MFi accessories. The new Lightning receptacle, scheduled to start shipping next year, will allow accessory makers to build new types of accessories that include a port for Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector previously reserved for its own iOS devices (pictured above)....

Just over four months since the Apple Watch began its Apple Retail Store debut for try-ons, Apple has started to tweak the process this week, according to Apple Retail employees. Until this week, a customer who walked into an Apple Store seeking to try on Apple Watch was required to make an appointment and provide details such as their name and Apple ID to an Apple Store employees. For this week forward, Apple Stores are speeding up the try-on process by dropping the former appointment requirement and not requiring potential customers to share their information with the store employee....

Nothing. There’s no difference between Apple Trade In and Apple GiveBack. Just before Earth Day 2018, Apple rebranded its Trade In program as GiveBack, and around Earth Day 2019, Apple walked back that branding change and is now once again referring to its trade in program as Apple Trade In. Whatever you think of the material on offer, you can’t really deny that Apple TV+ shows look amazing. With most TV+ content offering 4K HDR video and Dolby Atmos sound, Apple is flexing its CDN muscles with its new streaming service. In a forum post, FlatpanelsHD editor-in-chief Rasmus Larsen has now put some numbers to the claims. Rasmus Larsen writes that TV+ shows have the highest streaming quality for 4K out of all the services on the market at the moment, and eclipses most iTunes movies in bit rates....

At its WWDC 2018 keynote, Apple has officially unveiled macOS 10.14 Mojave. The update will be available later this year to Mac users and includes new features, interface tweaks, and more. One of the more timely WWDC announcements was Apple Watch handwashing detection. The coronavirus crisis means everyone is being encouraged to wash their hands more frequently, and to ensure that we’re doing so thoroughly. But the handwashing detection feature wasn’t developed hastily in response, says Apple, but was rather years in development … WHO and CDC guidelines recommend handwashing for at least 20 seconds, and watchOS 7 aims to automatically detect when you’re washing your hands, and to start a 20-second countdown timer with a cute animation....
