OregonLive notes that government filings from last week show Apple has taken over a hydroelectric project near its Oregon data center. Apple has previously reported that it powers its data centers entirely on renewable energy. The hydroelectric plant in Oregon will help maintain its 100% renewable energy rating. In fact, on Apple’s environmental website, the company notes that the Prineville site will source power from hydroelectric energy in addition to wind and solar....

Following the depositions of former Apple head of software engineering Scott Forstall in the Epic vs. Apple case, we’ve come to learn some interesting details about the early days of the iPhone and the App Store. Now Forstall has revealed that Apple once considered letting Adobe bring Flash to iOS, but the results were “embarrassing.” iPhone and iPod touch never supported Flash, which was a really popular technology at that time....

Apple has announced a new deal with Peanuts Worldwide and Lee Mendelson Film Productions to bring new originals and classic Peanuts specials to Apple TV+. Starting this month, Apple TV+ users will be able to stream iconic Peanuts content throughout the upcoming holiday season. Apple explains that the deal includes a second season of the Apple TV+ original series Snoopy in Space as well as a handful of new original specials including ones for Mother’s Day, Earth Day, New Year’s Eve, and going back to school....

As if Disney+ weren’t enough, there will be another Apple TV+ competitor from next April, in the form of NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service, Peacock … We first learned back in January that the new service was on the way, though little was known then. The company shared in July that The Office would be exclusive to the service once the Netflix deal expires, and we’ve today learned a lot more – including the name of the service, after the network’s mascot....

Apple has just released an update to the 2nd generation Apple TV — version 4.4.2 (9A336a). We’re not sure if the update features anything besides bug fixes, but we’re downloading to see. Let us know what you’re getting in the comments below. Apple’s last update to the Apple TV, version 4.4.1, was pulled at first but then reintroduced. The update brought bug fixes, and we suspect that 4.4.2 does the same....

Apple just reported earnings — and as ever the company does not break out unit sales of Apple Watch. However, Apple’s wearables business, which includes Apple Watch and AirPods, continues to be strong. Apple told the FT that wearables revenue is up 60 percent year-over-year. Luca Maestri said that wearables saw 60 percent growth in revenue terms. Adding up the last four quarters, wearables revenue now exceeds $10 billion: This is a more specific number than what Apple declares in its financial statements....

A new report from Bloomberg goes into detail about how relations between Apple and Qualcomm soured so quickly, after years of collaboration, featuring quotes from Qualcomm executives and excerpts from a new interview with Apple SVP Bruce Sewell. Sewell points out that the Qualcomm modem inside an iPhone costs Apple about $18. In addition, Apple has to pay 5 percent of the phone’s sale price. It is that royalty that Apple deems exorbitant and unfair....

The schedule for WWDC 2017 has just been announced and includes a new ‘Podcast Studio’. From Tuesday, podcasters will be able to reserve one hour slots and record in a specially-made recording studio inside the McEnery Convention Center. Apple says that the ‘fully outfitted studio’ allows for the creation of audio podcasts with up to four guests per show. Apple experts are on hand to provide support and podcasters are given a copy of their session to distribute freely how they see fit....

The streaming wars are only getting started, with various networks and companies launching their own subscription services – Netflix is definitely not the only option to watch films and TV shows from the comfort of your home anymore. The latest IDC data on the wearables market suggests that Apple Watch sales are enjoying modest growth, up from an estimated 3.6M units in Q2 to 3.9M in Q3. This growth is mainly due to Apple taking the Watch into new markets, it says, though September’s introduction of modest discounts along with gold and rose gold Sport models is also likely to have helped. However, while Apple has emerged as the undisputed market leader in smartwatches, Fitbit has retained the top slot in the overall wearables sector....

Apple is promoting Hour of Code at its retail stores next week for the fifth year running with free coding classes for kids. Apple is also rolling out a new Swift Playgrounds challenge for Hour of Code to promote the company’s developer language using its educational iPad app. Registration for the free Apple Store workshops is now open with sessions available December 4 through 10. For Swift Playgrounds on iPad, you can use the Hour of Code challenge to create a digital robot “with new parts including cyborg eyes and electric hula hoop arms” from anywhere....

Apple is taking legal action against its former materials lead, Simon Lancaster, over allegedly leaking trade secrets to the media. The lawsuit accuses Lancaster of abusing his “position and trust within the company to systematically disseminate Apple’s sensitive trade secret information in an effort to obtain personal benefits.” The court document detailing the lawsuit was made public on Thursday. Lancaster allegedly used his senior role at Apple to “gain access to internal meetings and documents outside the scope” of his job as materials lead at Apple....

As Apple continues to approve more Apple Watch apps following the device going up for pre-order late last week, a long list of healthcare companies are showing off apps for the Apple Watch at the HIMSS 2015 conference this week in Chicago. Inlcuded are apps from HCSC, WebMD, Kaiser Permanente, Dexcom, HealthTap, Vocera and many others, enabling everything from health records for patients to medication reminders and continuous glucose monitoring on the Apple Watch....

Update: Confusing the situation further, HDBlog has received news from Italian Apple PR that Milan will not have Apple Watch stock to buy. Amidst all the craziness, it now transpires that Apple Watch will in fact be available to be buy at some retail locations on Friday. The New York Times reports that select boutique locations will have stock in the brick-and-mortar locations of Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch....

After closing on September 16th to receive a renovation, Apple’s Third Street Promenade store in Santa Monica, California will reopen on November 17th at 10:00 A.M. Updates to the store will include a newly added Forum, expansive Video Wall, and Apple’s latest fixtures and displays. To promote the store’s reopening, Apple has updated its retail webpage with line art themed by coastal colors and the tagline “For all the imagination under the sun....

HBO Now App And to coincide with that announcement, HBO, in partnership with Apple, announced a standalone streaming app called HBO Now that will be available to Apple customers starting in April – which will be before the premiere of season 5 of Game of Thrones. HBO Now will premier on Apple TV, iPad, and iPhone in April and cost $14.99/month. That means you will get instant access to every episode of every season of all HBO original programs, sports, documentaries, etc....

Apple today has announced a significant update to Final Cut Pro X, bringing new editing features and workflow improvements. Apple says that Final Cut Pro 10.4.9 is available today as a free update for existing users.
