Ahead of the release of iOS 9 set for tomorrow, Apple has started updating its iOS apps beginning with improvements and fixes for its iWork suite of iOS apps. All three apps— Pages, Numbers, and Keynote—get an update today with “stability improvements and bug fixes,” many of which are likely related to the iOS 9 update arriving tomorrow. iOS 9 will officially arrive Wednesday, September 16th, for the iPhone 4s and later, iPod touch 5th generation and later, iPad 2 and later and iPad mini and later....

A new report from Counterpoint Research today details that smartwatch shipments continued to increase in Q3 2020 compared to the same period last year. Industry shipments were up 6% in the quarter and Apple increased its share of the market by 2%. Apple now holds a 28% share of the smartwatch market, up from 26% in the same quarter last year. Apple’s position is even stronger when it comes to sales, the report explains, reaching $2....

Earlier this month, Apple Watch fall detection made a humorous appearance on James Corden’s The Late Late Show when it was unexpectedly triggered by a guest in the audience. Following that, Siri on Apple Watch recently made an unplanned appearance on a BBC broadcast this week after a meteorologist accidentally activated the assistant. As noted by Mashable, meteorologist Tomasz Schafernaker was delivering his forecast on BBC Thursday when Siri chimed in to help....

Apple will begin rolling out an iPhone trade-in program in China in the near future. The option may become available in stores as soon as March 31st, allowing Chinese users to take advantage of the program that has helped boost iPhone sales in several countries already, including the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Chinese retail employees will determine the condition of the phone being traded in, and offer Apple Store credit to customers, Bloomberg reports....

Apple TV+ has officially announced its sci-fi series ‘Invasion’, which has been in production for almost two years — shooting was naturally delayed due to the pandemic. The show follows characters across several continents preparing for an alien invasion. It will premiere on October 22nd, 2021. Invasion stars Sam Neill, Shamier Anderson, Firas Nassar, Golshifteh Farahani, and Shioli Kutsana. Each must prepare and battle the oncoming threat in a different way....

Following the addition of the official Cricket Australia channel for Apple TV users down under earlier this week, Apple refreshed its video streaming box for US users Friday night with new content through the Tennis Channel Everywhere service. The new Apple TV channel features both on-demand tennis and live matches with an optional annual subscription. The annual subscription is called Tennis Channel Plus and goes for $69.99/year unlocking access to live tennis coverage including the 2015 Australian Open starting next week and 2015 French Open starting in June....

Various retailers, most notably Walmart, are set to offer Apple Watch Series 3 priced from $129 while bringing prices down to new all-time lows in the process. Next week, Apple TV+ series ‘The Oprah Conversation’ will feature an interview between Oprah Winfrey and former president Barack Obama. The discussion will revolve around Obama’s upcoming memoir, ‘A Promised Land’. The episode will debut on November 17th at 9AM Eastern Time, the same day as the book’s release. Apple TV+ will be streaming the episode for free, so anyone can watch if they have access to the TV app — no subscription required....

With next week’s Apple Watch event fast approaching, Apple has revealed its retail selling strategies to employees, including a focus on “three key features” and a plan to encourage Watch customers to upgrade or switch to new iPhones. According to selling guidelines provided by sources within Apple Retail, Apple believes that “many customers have already decided they want an Apple Watch,” and will use the Watch to “position the benefits” of purchasing a compatible iPhone model....

GPNE Corp, a Honolulu company that licenses technology patents, took Apple to court recently over a few patents the company claimed were violated in several of Apple’s iOS products. The technology in question was originally patented for pagers (remember those? yeah, me neither) and the patents have since expired. Apple regularly takes on so-called “patent trolls” looking to profit from technology patents for widely used tech, but it’s not every day the company comes out and calls a spade a spade....

Digitimes this morning is reporting that Foxconn (aka, Hon Hai Precision) has won the manufacturing contract, rather than Apple’s long-term Mac maker, Quanta. This figures as Foxconn is also Apple’s iPod/iPhone product manufacturer, and suggests at least that this tablet will be a larger sibling in that side of the Apple family. (Recall, there have been some claims of two tablets on Apple’s road map, one running OS X, the other running a variant of the OS X Mobile found on iPhones and the iPhone touch)....

The Apple TV+ streaming service is launching this fall, with original shows in tow. It’s been just over a decade since Apple first took steps to incorporate their Apple TV concept into their already diverse and highly popular line of personal electronics. Though originally intended to join the company’s other “i”-based products as iTV, the name was changed to Apple TV shortly after being unveiled, as a result of legal threats from UK broadcast network ITV....

A woman was saved by her Apple Watch from sexual assault by a man who broke into her apartment… The Calgary Herald reports that the man admitted his intention after the woman used her Apple Watch to text her boyfriend to ask him to call the police. Police arrived in time to save her. Macindoe admitted to copying the woman’s building swipe card and apartment key to gain access. John Joseph Macindoe pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including break and enter with intent to commit sexual assault, in connection with incidents last spring....

The Apple Watch Series 6 packs several notable changes to its internal design, as detailed in a new teardown from iFixit. The teardown highlights the removal of Force Touch, as well as a slightly larger battery, thinner design, and more. With the first beta of watchOS 7 back in June, Apple dropped support for the pressure-sensitive Force Touch feature, all but confirming that the hardware for the feature would be removed with the Apple Watch Series 6....

Apple will be live streaming today’s launch event, first revealed by the Apple Events channel returning to Apple TV, the icon displaying the theme for the event and a message saying “tune in at 10 am for the live stream.” The event will also be streamed on the web when it begins at 10am Pacific/1pm Eastern. As usual, live streaming requires Safari 4 or later on OS X v10.6 or later; Safari on iOS 4....

Apple today announced that Mythic Quest, Apple TV+’s first scripted comedy series, will debut on the platform February 7. The show stars Rob McElhenney as the creative director of a video game studio. All nine episodes will be available on the premiere date. The news follows yesterday’s announcement of a five-part documentary series for Valentines Day. In terms of new content for January, Apple TV+ (so far) has only announced the Little America anthology, debuting January 17....

We’re just over 24 hours away from the kickoff of Apple’s big iPhone 7 keynote, and the company is reminding Apple TV owners that you can easily view the show from home with the Apple Events channel. The Apple TV app refreshed over the long weekend with bokeh artwork used to promote tomorrow’s Apple keynote. You can even use the channel to see a reminder for when the keynote kicks off in your local timezone....

Apple TV+ is continuing its awards run with a pickup of its first Peabody Award, a little over six months since the streaming service launched. The anachronistic comedy ‘Dickinson’ was one of ten winners in the Peabody 30’s entertainment category. The Peabody Awards are a prestigious industry accreditation. They particularly focus on television that has social and cultural impact, choosing ‘stories that matter’. The institution said that they were more than 1300 candidates this year, with Dickinson being one of 30 winners....

Apple is working to offer even more exclusive content on Apple TV+, as the company has now signed a new multi-year deal with screenwriter Mark Bomback. Bomback is the showrunner behind Defending Jacob, one of the shows available on Apple TV+. According to a Deadline report, Defending Jacob is considered one of the top three series premieres on Apple TV+. The show had good ratings on its premiere and kept the numbers elevated in its first 10 days....
