Apple will stop selling its current Mac Pro professional desktop computer in Europe on March 1st, according to our sources. While the Mac Pro has been seen as an Apple product nearing discontinuation because of its small user-base, lack of significant promotion by Apple, Apple’s strategy of moving into the “post-PC” era, and, perhaps, most controversially, the lack of a notable update in a few years, none of these are seemingly the reason for the imminent discontinuation....

Apple announced today that Phil Schiller will transition into a new Apple Fellow role. Schiller has long served as Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, but that is a position that will now be occupied by Apple’s Greg Joswiak. In his new role as an Apple Fellow, Schiller will continue to “lead the App Store and Apple events.” He will also continue to offer “thought partnership and guidance” as an Apple Fellow and will report directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook....

For iOS 13, iPadOS 13, and macOS Catalina beta testers, Apple is trying out a new sign-in process for iCloud on the web. When you head to beta.icloud.com on a device running the betas, you can now sign-in to your account using Face ID or Touch ID. When you visit iCloud in Safari on a device running the iOS, iPadOS, or macOS betas, you’ll see a new pop-up asking if you’d like to sign-in using your Apple ID with biometrics....

The new logos that will be used for products coming out of the MFi program are not a huge change from the previous branding, but they do notably remove icons representing actual devices in exchange for a simplified Apple logo and just the iOS device names in text. You’ll also notice the order of the devices has changed from “iPod, iPhone, iPad” on the old logo to “iPhone, iPad, and iPod” on the new branding, which we have to assume signifies the iPhone’s growth and importance in the lineup since the original logo was introduced....

Coming on the heels of Apple’s latest endeavor into the mobile ad space, Apple has posted a note to all iPhone OS developers telling them their apps will be rejected if they include location aware advertising and don’t use Core Location for any other functionality on the app. If the app uses Core Location to find weather, restaurants, ATMs, etc, Apple will let the app through the App Store even if Admob is connected to location services....

Apple has proposed a settlement agreement with South Korea’s antitrust regulator, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC), in Seoul. Apple has been accused of abusing its dominant position with mobile phone carriers by imposing three unfair requirements as a condition of selling iPhones … Background Apple was accused in 2016 of anti-competitive practices in South Korea. Because the popularity of iPhones meant carriers had to sell them, Apple was able to dictate terms....

Samsung’s latest Gear S2 smartwatch is about to go up against one of the top tier smartwatches in the game. Apple has confirmed on its website that the October event will be streamed. The URL is ‘apple.com/live’, so it seems that Apple is using the same video/blog platform that it first used for the iPhone 6/Apple Watch event in September. As the event progressed, Apple added tweets, product information and photos to the timeline below the main video. Let’s hope the stream doesn’t also experience the same issues as the September event this time around, which made the event unwatchable for many people....

Apple, under Steve Jobs, has always been the master of timing, bringing products out right at the cusp of technological maturity. The iPod and iPhone are perfect examples of this. When the technology made sense for a product that people would want to use, and not a moment before, Apple released something amazing. There were MP3 Players before the iPod and smartphones before the iPhone, but when Apple delivered the products, it changed the game....

Dust off those iPhone nano rumors! Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is working on a smaller, cheaper version of the iPhone for sale off contract. The prototype was about one-third smaller than the iPhone 4, said Bloomberg’s source. (kinda like a HP Veer?) To keep prices down, the smaller phone will use a processor, display and other components similar to those used in the current iPhone 4. As we already found out, Apple’s also has a Dual Mode iPhone in the pike for the summer time:...

Earlier this week, Apple debuted a new ad for the iPhone X that highlights the ease of Apple Pay with Face ID. Now, the company has shared an addition ad in a similar format, this time showcasing Apple Pay Cash via iMessage… The ad is a short, 15-second video that shows off the process of paying someone directly in the Messages application, using Face ID for the authentication process. Apple Pay Cash launched as part of iOS 11....

In addition to reviving the iTunes Festival channel ahead of the music event, Apple has pushed out an additional channel on Apple TV. Showtime Anytime, the premium cable and satellite television network, is now available for streaming content on Apple TV. The channel includes free full episodes of select episodes of certain shows. In addition to acting as an on-demand channel, Showtime Anytime on Apple TV also supports viewing live broadcasts with an authenticated subscription to supported TV providers....

Have a damaged Apple Watch Series 2 or Apple Watch Series 3 sitting around? There’s a chance Apple could replace it for free under a new replacement program publicly announced on Friday. From Apple’s support document published today: Apple’s new Screen Replacement Program covers a specific type of screen cracking that may affect models sold between September 2016 and September 2019. That means select Apple Watch models sold through next month may be included in this replacement program....

Several users on Instagram and Twitter have captured photos of the Apple Watch on display at French retailer Colette just ahead of Paris fashion week, where members of Apple’s design team have been spotted in the past few days. The Colette store, located at 213 rue Saint-Honoré in the 1st Arrondissement of Paris was hidden for most of the day according to an Instagram user who lives across the street. Colette is a French “brick-and-click” clothing and accessory retailer....

Many of us wondered whether the Mac Pro line was dead, but Apple has told Daring Fireball’s John Gruber and others that it is continuing development on its high-end desktop, and will after this year be releasing a ‘completely rethought’ model with a modular design intended to make the machine more upgradable. The company is also updating the existing Mac Pro today – and will be making new Apple Displays to go with the future model, along with new pro-focused iMacs …...

Mac OS 10.11 is El Capitan Continuing with Apple’s recent naming tradition, Mac OS X has location-based names rather than cats. El Capitan is a rock formation in Yosemite National park. Rather than the major changes in previous operating system announcements, MacOS 10.11 features more evolutionary changes. The update is free and should be available in the Fall. Any system that runs Yosemite can run El Capitan, according to Apple....

Some interesting info coming out of the requisite AppleTV teardown from iFixit. First off, the AppleTV has an 8GB Samsung Flash chip but room for another 8GB (v2 1080P version?). While most of that space is probably reserved for caching movies, a few apps could use this space to build a home. The Panasonic board that contains the Broadcom Wifi chip also has an FM radio. Apple could enable this at some point (or some hackers could like the Droid 2) or maybe it just came along for the ride?...
