Apple introduced a new version of its Transporter developer application on the Mac App Store for the first time last year. Today, the company is once again updating the Transporter app with new features, including metadata upload and support for 29 more languages. With Transporter, developers can easily upload apps to the Store Connect App platform. More than that, the app also lets creators upload content such as music, movies, TV shows, and books to the iTunes Store and Apple Books....

What’s an iCar? See, as long ago as last year there were rumours of meetings between Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn and Apple’s Steve Jobs. The two men were alleged to be discussing proposals to jointly develop a compact car that integrated Apple solutions. These talks reportedly fell apart last December, but the iCar legend lives on. Perhaps Apple simply allowed Jonathan Ive and his design team to offer Volkswagen some advice on the creation of simplified user interfaces?...

iFixit’s teardown of the Apple Watch has revealed that the sophisticated heart-rate monitor used is actually capable of acting as a pulse oximeter, allowing it to calculate the oxygen content of your blood by measuring how much infrared light is absorbed. This data would be useful for health and fitness monitoring, but the functionality is not currently enabled in the watch. As iFixit notes, there are a couple of possible reasons Apple is not currently allowing to watch to display this data … First, it may simply be that the company hasn’t yet achieved the necessary accuracy and reliability from the sensor....

Following Apple’s media event in San Francisco this afternoon to reveal the new iPhone 5 and a slew of other products, the company began detailing devices further on its website. According to Apple’s official specs page for the iPhone 5, the device will ship in two separate CDMA and GSM versions in the United States (the iPhone 4S only shipped as a combined CDMA and GSM unit). Two Apple suppliers this morning, Lumentum and AMS, are reporting weak revenues ailed by weakening global smartphone sales, particularly hurt by the slowdown within China. The latter of the two, AMS, struggled on an earnings call predicated with a guidance revision, seeing a 58% decline in quarterly profits YoY alongside a dividend suspension. Interestingly, both suppliers make critical components for Apple’s Face ID system exclusively found in newer iPhone models....

Apple looks to continue its rapid expansion of its retail stores according to a reliable local report from MacReports. The report claims that Apple is working towards launching another retail store in Istanbul, Turkey. The company is reportedly assembling a team to lead the process, as well as advertising new available positions in Turkey relating to the opening of another retail store. The report claims that Apple plans to open the new retail location sometime this year in the Asian part of Istanbul....

Reviews for the new Apple TV 4K are out today. While most of the articles focus on the new Siri Remote, which is a “must buy,” many pointed out that Apple’s set-top-box price is still prohibitive. Today, CNN interviewed Apple’s VP of Product Marketing for Home and Audio Tim Twedahl about the new Apple TV 4K. For quite a while, users have been asking for a new Apple TV – myself included – with a redesigned Siri Remote, a faster processor, and a cheaper version of the set-top-box....

Naturally, ARM management refused to disclose just who the new licensee actually is, beyond describing it as a “leading handset OEM”, adding “which is developing its roadmap for mobile computing devices.” As EETimes observes, there’s no complete evidence of the licensee being Apple, but that company is now a leading handset OEM and is widely known to be developing mobile computing devices. An ARM processor is in the iPhone (to the detriment of Intel) and Apple recently invested in PA Semi, which works on PowerPC chips and has extensive ARM experience....

A report today suggests that Apple Store staff t-shirts may have been made by a Chinese company which is believed to have used forced labor in its production. The claims against the garment company have been taken seriously enough for US sanctions to be imposed … The Guardian reports. Evidence suggesting that Apple bought staff t-shirts from the company appears strong. Apple has imported clothes – probably uniforms for staff in stores – from a company facing US sanctions over forced labour at a subsidiary firm in China’s western Xinjiang region, shipping records show....

Apple TV+ has secured the rights to the upcoming World War II film Greyhound which was written by and stars Tom Hanks. The film was originally scheduled to debut in theaters and normal distribution channels by Sony Pictures, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused a shift in plans. As reported by Deadline, Sony Pictures originally acquired the world rights to Greyhound and had plans to release it in theaters on May 7....

There were no shortage of details regarding Apple’s much rumored radio service leading up to today’s keynote address. The rumors said Apple was planning on introducing a free, ad-supported radio service, similar to Pandora, that would be highly integrated with a tweaked model for its iAd business. Apple has now officially unveiled the service dubbed ‘iTunes Radio’ and provided some details on exactly how it will work during its keynote presentation this morning at Moscone West in San Francisco....

Apple today updated the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the Magic Keyboard, alongside performance and tech spec improvements. The new 13-inch Pro features scissor switch keys, marking the end of the butterfly keyboard MacBook era. The new MacBook Pro is available to order today, starting at $1299. Apple has doubled the base SSD storage across all configurations. The 13-inch MacBook Pro can now be specced to feature tenth-generation quad-core Intel CPUs, and offers 16 GB RAM as standard on certain models for the first time....

On the heels of launching a YouTube channel dedicated to how-to tutorial videos, Apple today pushed a significant version 2.0 update to its Apple Support app for iOS. The app, which initially launched last November, received a major update back in the spring that allowed users to schedule repairs at participating Apple Authorized Service Providers, and provided broader access to Genius Bar reservations. Today’s update adds a redesigned user interface, along with a new Discover tab dedicated to learning about your Apple products....

Apple’s VP of product marketing Greg Joswiak recently talked with Wired about the runaway success of AirPods. According to the Apple executive, the spread of AirPods throughout society has been “almost like wildfire.” Joswiak also elaborated on some of the inspiration behind AirPods, saying that Apple first had the vision for wireless earbuds in the early days of the iPhone: When the technology was there to create AirPods, Joswiak says Apple worked alongside Stanford to 3D-scan “hundreds of different ears and ear styles and shapes” to make a design that was a “one-size solution....

The long-running saga surrounding troubled Apple supplier Japan Display continues, with a much-touted rescue plan today thrown into doubt. A backer who was putting up almost a third of the cash for Japan Display’s belated expansion plans for OLED screens has withdrawn …. Caixin Global carries the report. Apple is taking a different approach to pre-orders and sales for Apple Watch, which has a lot to do with the product being Apple’s first fashion accessory. For that reason, many customers will actually want to try the Apple Watch on in person before making the purchase. To get a feel for the new try-on experience — Apple started letting customers schedule appointments to try-on the device in-stores on April 10 — the company is surveying customers afterwards to get feedback and see if they plan on purchasing the device....

Earlier today, Apple rolled out the second beta of tvOS 9.2 for the fourth-generation Apple TV. The original beta included new features such as folder organization and Bluetooth keyboard support, but one highly requested new feature has been added today with the second beta. With tvOS 9.2 on Apple TV, users can now access their full iCloud Photo Library. The feature is turned off by default, but can be activated via the Settings app....
