Over the last several years, Apple has ramped up its focus on product trade-ins, providing users instant credit toward new products when they trade in their old devices. Some of these trade-ins are handled by Apple itself, but the company largely relies on third-party partners. A new report from The Verge highlights a growing number of complaints centered around Phobio, an Atlanta-based trade-in partner that Apple works with closely. When customers trade in a product to Apple, they often think they are trading in directly to Apple, but that’s not actually the case....

Apple successfully defended itself against a Motorola lawsuit over an accidental hang-up sensor on its iPhone line. Bloomberg reported this evening that U.S. International Trade Commission judge Thomas Pender ruled in Apple’s favor, as he has before, declaring Motorola’s patent invalid. The ITC’s commission still has the power to review the ruling, but that hasn’t stopped Motorola from releasing an official statement on the matter. Jennifer Erickson, a Motorola Mobility spokesperson, told Bloomberg in a statement: “We’re disappointed with this outcome and are evaluating our options....

Following its earnings report, Tim Cook today announced that Apple will be lowering iPhone prices in some markets outside of the United States, to bring prices more in line to what they were before recent currency fluctuations hit (via Reuters). Cook says Apple is rethinking how it prices iPhones. It will no longer track the US dollar price exactly and instead set iPhone prices in local currency for each market....

The revamped Apple TV set top box and iPad Pro will both begin showing up in Apple Retail Stores for sale during the first week of November after going on sale via Apple’s website in late October, according to reliable sources. It is also likely that the first online orders of both products will reach customers in early November. Apple has previously said that the new Apple TV will go on sale at some point in October, and that the iPad Pro would go on sale in November....

Apple has quietly launched a new mentorship program aimed at first-generation college students studying accounting and economics. It includes support from Apple employees and the possibility for job shadowing and even paid internships. The new program starts early in 2021 and applications are open now. Spotted by MyHealthApple, the new college mentorship program does have some notable requirements. To be eligible to apply, you’ll need to be a first-generation college freshman or sophomore as well as majoring accounting, economics, or finance....

Apple was clear with developers from the start that the Apple Watch is all about “quick, easy looks” rather than lengthy interactions, and it seems the message has been taken on board by major brands, reports the WSJ. Adam Grossman, founder of the Dark Sky weather app, echoed the comment. “If people use their desktop computers for hours at a time and their phones for minutes at a time, we think people will use the Watch for seconds at a time,” said Shayne Sweeney, an engineering manager at Facebook’s photo-sharing site Instagram, which created a Watch app....

The Apple Watch is yet again being credited with helping someone contact emergency services when it otherwise would have been impossible. As detailed by WBMM, a Chicago man is crediting his Apple Watch with helping save him from drowning. Phillip Esho said that he was riding a jet ski in Lake Michigan when a wave flipped him over, knocking him and his phone into the water: Esho, however, was wearing his Apple Watch....

Yep, seven years after the billion-dollar patent trial between Apple and Samsung first began with a lawsuit by Apple, it still isn’t over yet. The two companies are headed back to court today … Apple accused Samsung of violating five of its patents, three design ones, and two utility ones. The design patents were for the overall look of the iPhone – designed at a time when all of Samsung’s phones had keypads or keyboards....

Apple Watch Series 5 is the first version to include a built-in digital compass, but Apple hasn’t managed to change the laws of physics when it comes to how magnets work. For that reason, Apple suggests using certain bands over others if compass reliability is important to you. Apple has informed developers today that all new apps submitted to the App Store from April 2018 must support the iPhone X’s Super Retina display. Chinese brand Xiaomi created an entire business out of copying Apple, seen in everything from an iOS-like skin for Android through websites and product launches – but perhaps the most blatant example was an iPad mini clone it named the Mi Pad. Update: Foxconn has denied the Reuters report, stating that the claim is “completely inaccurate and totally without foundation.” The company told us that increased automation will result in reduced recruitment, but that there are no plans to reduce its workforce “now or anytime in the future.” Foxconn, the lead assembler for iPhones, is planning to cut its workforce despite widespread expectations that Apple will today announce record sales of its smartphones, reports Reuters....

Apple’s announcement that its upcoming Apple TV+ service will have ‘dozens’ of original shows when it launches in the fall puts it in a hopeless position in the short-term, say analysts. They believe Apple can make a success of it long-term, but the company will have to be willing to burn through huge amounts of money for years to get there … Business Insider saw the investors note from Morgan Stanley, noted for taking a generally upbeat of the company’s activities....
