The Wall Street Journal confirms the story leaked last month (no pun intended!) that Apple has agreed to pay a total of $53m to 153,000 early iPhone and iPod customers denied warranty coverage when the liquid indicators fitted inside the devices. A class-action lawsuit had alleged that the indicators fitted to the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS as well as the first and second generation iPod Touches could be triggered by moisture and humidity in normal use, rather than an accident – the classic one being a phone dropped into a toilet …...

‘SEE’ debuted at Apple TV+’s launch all the way back in November of 2019 but production on the second season of this post-apocalyptic show was halted because of the COVID-19 pandemic. After more than a year, Apple has updated the videos shown on the Aerial screensaver available on the fourth-generation Apple TV. The rotation of clips of landmarks and places has not changed since tvOS launched … until today. While I personally find the iPhone X notch almost unnoticeable much of the time, and cute when it’s visible, others have been more critical. There have been complaints that it’s asymmetrical and un-Apple-like in its design, and even that it ‘ruins’ the display. But Apple VP Greg Joswiak has defended it as one of the company’s most impressive technical achievements … Quoted in Tom’s Guide, Joswiak said that the focus should be on everything it achieves....

Apple Wallet and Apple Pay have gradually expanded to additional stadiums, events, and more over the last several years. Today, college athletics ticketing service Paciolan announced that it is adding support for Apple Wallet, allowing fans to enter football games using their iPhone or Apple Watch. Starting with this year’s college football season, select universities will offer contactless tickets for iPhone and Apple Watch. At launch, those schools include Baylor University, Louisiana State University, Michigan State University, University of Mississippi, Georgia Tech, and Rutgers University....

The war between Apple and Samsung on the patent front seems to never end…and it is about to get worse. Cupertino-based Apple filed a motion late Friday afternoon against South Korean-based Samsung, asking for another $707 million in damages on top of the $1.05 billion it was awarded in late August. Apple said it wants “$400 million damage award for design infringement by Samsung; $135 million for willful infringement of its utility patents; $121 million in supplemental damages based on Samsung’s product sales not covered in the jury’s deliberation; and $50 million of prejudgment interest on damages through December 31,” reported Reuters....

Apple Watch shipments grew 22% in 2018, according to new Counterpoint Research data, and a large chunk of that appears to have been due to the popularity of the Series 4. The company says that the Apple Watch Series 4 was the best-selling model during 2018 despite being available for just one quarter … The data is from Counterpoint’s Global Smartwatch Tracker. Apple’s share of the smartwatch market is gradually shrinking as the number of players increases, it says, but the Cupertino company still dominates the market with a 37% market share....

Apple and Google are both cracking down on applications that integrate the X-Mode Social tracking software. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Apple has informed developers that they have two weeks to remove X-Mode’s trackers from their applications. The decision from Apple and Google comes after investigative reporting revealed that X-Mode collects data directly from applications and eventually passes it along to US defense contractors. X-Mode would pay to embed its SDK into other developers’ applications in exchange for the location data it collects....

Apple TV+ continues to set release dates for upcoming shows and movies. Apple has now announced a January 17 release date for the ‘Little America’ show from Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V Gordon, and renewed the show for a second season. Apple will release the entirety of ‘Little America’ on January 17, rather than releasing new episodes weekly like it has done for most of its other shows. ‘Little America’ is an anthology that “goes beyond the headlines to bring to life the funny, romantic, heartfelt and surprising stories of immigrants in America,” Apple says....

Apple has published a new press release this morning detailing the multiple ways it will be celebrating Black History Month in February. The company is launching new editorial collections, Apple Maps Guides, limited-edition Apple Watch hardware, and more. First and foremost, Apple is introducing the Black Unity Collection for the Apple Watch. This collection includes a limited-edition Apple Watch Series 6 as well as a Black Unity Sport Band. Through this collection, Apple is supporting global organizations to help advance their missions in promoting and achieving equality and civil rights in the US and around the world....

For those who purchased the third-generation iPad recently, and found themselves dumbfounded when the fourth-generation iPad was announced this afternoon, we have good news: CNET reported that local Apple Stores might replace a third-generation iPads with the new fourth-generation if it was purchased within the last 30 days. It is up to local Apple Stores to make the call if a customer can exchange or not. When speaking to a manager of an Apple Store, it was explained that the policy is on a store-to-store basis....

GigaOm found yesterday that the new fifth-generation iPod touch is without a light sensor, prohibiting the device from auto-setting the brightness. Raghid Harake, a curious customer turned concerned, emailed Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller (via iDownloadBlog) to find out why. Things are moving fast in the Epic Games vs Apple battle. After Fortnite was pulled from the App Store for breaking Apple’s rules — sneaking in a direct payment method to get around the in-app purchase system — Epic almost immediately filed a lawsuit against Apple. Now the game developer says that Apple is terminating its account. Update: Reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has officially responded stating that they “very much want” Epic to remain an Apple developer but won’t make an exception for the company....

Two weeks after the Apple Watch Series 4 and Apple Watch Hermès release, Apple Watch Nike+ is shipping to customers and hitting stores. The Nike+ version of Apple Watch Series 4 will be available starting Friday, October 5th. Apple Watch Nike+ is almost identical to the aluminum Apple Watch Series 4 — save for three differences. Prolific Apple developer and hacker Steve Troughton-Smith has messed around with the tvOS Simulator and coerced it into running at twice the standard HD resolution, 3840×2160, more commonly referred to as 4K.
