During its FQ4 conference call this morning, Apple supplier Lumentum reported a huge increase in orders for 3D sensing laser components thought to be included in the upcoming iPhone 8 to enable advanced augmented reality features, as noted by analyst Gene Munster at LoupVentures. To be specific, the company has $200M in orders during the quarter up from just $5 million in revenue for the 3D sensing tech during the June quarter....

One of the latest Apple TV+ shows in the works is an adaptation of the popular thriller Lady in the Lake by Laura Lippman. Now we’ve learned that the series will star Lupita Nyong’o and Natalie Portman. Reported by Variety, Lady in the Lake for Apple TV+ will be co-written by Alma Har’el and Dre Ryan with Endeavor Content serving as the studio. Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther, Us, Star Wars) and Natalie Portman (Black Swan, Thor, Star Wars)will take the lead roles in the series and also executive produce alongside Har’el and Ryan....

At its March event, Apple showcased Apple TV Channels, a feature that lets you subscribe to third-party streaming services directly in the TV app on iOS and tvOS. Apple teased CBS All Access as a partner, but the service was not among the services available at launch. Now, that might soon be about to change. In a post on Twitter, the CBS All Access Help account has revealed that CBS All Access will be coming to Apple TV Channels on July 29th....

The main Apple versus Qualcomm court battle, which starts today, looks set to be by far the world’s biggest patent or antitrust case, making previous lawsuits seem trivial in comparison. Apple and four of its suppliers are jointly seeking a staggering total of up to $30B in damages and other payments from Qualcomm, dwarfing even the largest of previous patent and antitrust cases … We’ve seen several earlier court battles between the two companies, but the case opening today in San Diego is the main event, in which Apple sues Qualcomm for unfair practices in the way it charged the iPhone maker for the use of its patents....

When an iPhone or other Apple device experiences hardware failures, Apple technicians perform an analysis of the device to determine whether it can be easily repaired or if the device must be entirely replaced. However, the company will soon be able to repair things like Face ID sensors and even cracked rear glass on iPhone 12 models without replacing the device. In an internal memo sent to Genius Bars and Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASP) obtained by MacRumors, Apple today informed that technicians will have access to a new method that allows them to repair more parts of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 without the need for a replacement unit....

As expected, Apple today brought Intel’s latest Broadwell Core i5 and Core i7 processors to the MacBook Air and Retina MacBook Pro families, beefing up both laptops with additional CPU and graphics power. Apple’s updated 11″ and 13″ MacBook Airs are shipping today with up to 2.2GHz CPUs, plus Intel’s HD Graphics 6000 GPUs, which are smaller, markedly faster, and capable of superior shading/texturing than the 5000-series GPUs they replace. They have Thunderbolt 2 ports, doubling the bandwidth of prior-generation Thunderbolt....

Last year, Apple rolled out the option to pay monthly for some of its two (in some cases three) year AppleCare+ plans for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Today, Apple quietly changed how it works so customers can buy an indefinite monthly AppleCare+ subscription. This sounds like customers can choose to continue the monthly AppleCare+ coverage as long as they’d like or until Apple can’t service the device anymore. The monthly subscription is available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch....

Apple today posted an update to its App Store review guidelines document for developers. The updated information pertains directly to App Store subscriptions, SiriKit, and iMessage apps including Sticker Packs. Previously, clarification about what developers could and could not do with regard to the new subscription enhancements announced just prior to WWDC 2016 was a bit ambiguous, but with today’s document update, guidelines become a lot more black and white....

Apple has updated its homepage with tributes from fans received at a special email address rememberingsteve@apple.com. The company says that over a million fans worldwide wrote to express their feelings regarding the company’s late co-founder who died October 5 at his home at the age of 56, just a day following the iPhone 4S media event. Apple is reportedly planning to ship the first successor to the Apple Watch sometime next year around the second or third quarter, according to Chinese media source UDN. The report cites comments made during a meeting with Barry Lam, chairman and founder of Quanta Computer, an Apple Watch manufacturer. While it’s no surprise that Apple would be planning to introduce the Apple Watch 2 in 2016, a third quarter release would mean a launch two years after the first model was introduced and roughly a year and a half since it went on sale....

The Apple Watch Series 7 has brought about huge updates in terms of design to the flagship smartwatch series by Apple. Easily the most noticeable upgrade from previous iterations of the Apple Watch has been the larger display, squeezing all the way to the edges. With more and more people relying on their smartphone as both their camera and camcorder, the performance of the cameras is ever more important. A video shootout between the iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 found a number of interesting differences between them. Apple had a small surprise for its retail employees yesterday. After gifting them with urBeats earphones last week, Eddy Cue yesterday sent a video message stating that they would also receive a promo code for a free 9 month Apple Music subscription. MacRumors reports that the subscription runs for nine months. While nine months rather than a year seems a little odd, it does mean that anyone who has not yet used up their three-month free trial would get a year in total....

Similar to last year’s introduction of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, Apple will release three new ‘iPhone 11’ models this fall. The new iPhones will feature the Apple A13 chip, internally known by its platform codename Cebu, model T8030. According to people who’ve seen the devices, all three iPhone 11 models will still feature a Lightning port, contrary to some speculation that they would be moving to USB-C after the change on iPad Pro last year....
