Engadget’s got another Apple…er iTV scoop on their hands. According to their source, Apple is changing the name of the AppleTV to iTV and, with it, will forgo the use of 1080P video. Perhaps Apple’s A4 ARM Chip isn’t yet powerful enough to handle 1080P reliably (even though the specs on ARM Cortex A8 Processors will tell us otherwise). They reiterate it will be a small, $99 box with specs similar to other iOS devices and cloud storage....
As part of Apple’s earnings releases, Apple has announced an extension to its buyback plans. The company will now buyback an additional $30 billion of Apple stock, totalling $90 billion, significantly accelerating its original plans. The board has also announced a seven-for-one stock split beginning June 2nd 2014. Apple last split its stock in 2005, nine years ago. Apple will also increase the dividend by about 8 percent to $3....
Reuter’s reports today that Apple will expand its current five-store presence in China to the industrial cities of Chengdu and Shenzhen. Interestingly, both of those cities are where Foxconn produces iPhones and iPads (or have in the past). The Chengdu plant is where Want China Times (via MCV) reports a riot broke out late last night with male workers “taking advantage of a minor disturbance to address prior grievances.” The pessimist would say: Now those hundreds of thousands of factory workers can save a few months wage and head across town to buy something they make hundreds of every day....
Apple today announced it has ordered a new thriller series for Apple TV+ called ‘Shining Girls’. The show will star Elisabeth Moss, who you might recognize as the actress who plays the lead role in popular drama series The Handmaids Tale. The series is based off a best-selling novel of the same name. The drama follows Moss’s character as a Chicago reporter, who was badly assaulted in the past. She tries to trace down her attacker....
The Environmental Law Institute has today announced that Apple’s VP of environment, policy and social initiatives, Lisa Jackson, has won its distinguished 2018 Environmental Achievement Award. In a press release, ELI shared that the award was “in recognition of her visionary leadership and outstanding environmental stewardship over a most distinguished career.” Before starting her current role at Apple in 2013, Jackson was an administrator at the EPA and dealt with events such as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill....

Following the try-on appointments that allowed 15 minutes hands-on time with an Apple Watch (or an hour for the Edition), Apple is offering Apple Watch Basics workshops at selected retail stores. Appointments can be booked now, and the earliest workshops take place on the official (or perhaps now unofficial) launch date of 24th April. It’s unlikely many people will have received their Apple Watch by this date, and you won’t be able to buy one in-store before June, but if the tutorial videos or unofficial cheat-sheet still leave you wanting more, the workshops seem a good opportunity to get to grips with the new device … So far, the stores offering the workshop appear fairly random, and there’s no obvious way to find out which stores offer them other than trial-and-error....
Apple Stores in Germany will be among the next to reopen after extended closures in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Apple is reclosing all of its stores in the greater Melbourne area of Australia as portions of the state of Victoria prepare to enforce new lockdown measures. Apple has yet another court case on their hands with Bloomberg reporting that Seattle-based Cequint Inc. is seeking unspecified damages related to claims Apple products infringe on caller ID related patents. The company also wants the court in Wilmington, Delaware, where the complaint was filed yesterday, to issue a court order preventing Apple from using the technology in dispute. Researchers at three universities have accused Apple of taking an ‘immense risk’ with the security of user data thanks to what they say is a poor implementation of differential privacy. Differential privacy is a method of allowing Apple and other companies to analyse user data in a way intended to be completely anonymous.
