Everyone’s favorite hockey puck “hobby” has received a huge software update today. Apple TV 6.0, which has been in beta testing since June, brings with it iTunes Radio, AirPlay from iCloud, iCloud Photos and Videos (replacing Photo Stream), iTunes Music Store, and conference room mode. AirPlay from iCloud, which mirrors Google’s Chromecast, is a feature that must be turned on from the Settings. Once enabled, it allows you to “use your iOS device to play videos from iTunes in the Cloud”, which means the content is streamed directly to Apple TV rather than your iOS device....

The tvOS 13 update for Apple TV set-top boxes rolled out yesterday, and now Apple has started rolling out the new ‘under the sea’ screensavers produced in coordination with the BBC. There are ten new underwater ‘Aerial’ screensavers offering a beautiful look at corals, shoals of fish, and generally stunning imagery of sea life. You can find the new wallpaper videos on your Apple TV if you use the Aerials screensaver, which now incorporates panoramic vistas, space shots taken from the ISS, and the underwater clips....

Apple has today proposed a new set of emoji to the Unicode Consortium that focuses on accessibility. The new set includes at least nine new emoji. As reported by Emojipedia in a blog post: Emojipedia notes the opening remarks of Apple’s submission: Furthermore, Apple says this is just “an initial starting point,” as the company is partnering with the American Council of the Blind, the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, and the National Association of the Deaf....

Based on the most recent verdict in Apple v. Samsung, Apple is attempting to seek a permanent injunction against any Samsung device that infringes upon its patents. While this includes the devices that were at the center of the latest court case, it also includes “software or code capable of implementing any Infringing Feature, and/or any feature not more than colorably different therefrom,” which could be construed to mean current and even future devices....

Apple has reportedly been developing a non-invasive glucose monitoring system using the Apple Watch, but a new report claims the feature won’t be shipping anytime soon. The New York Times has detailed the Apple Watch proving its role as a medical device, and included is this bit: The detail comes months after CNBC reported that Apple has a team of experts developing sensors for the Apple Watch that can monitor blood sugar levels throughout the day....

Internal iCloud training As Apple’s yet-to-be-made-official fall festivities approach, we’ve heard that Apple has begun iOS 5 and iCloud training with retail store employees. According to these sources, training is done through a new section inside of the company’s recently released internal RetailMe application. Apple typically rolls out their major iOS releases in the days surrounding new iPhone launches. Apple Stores usually only begin their training of new software in the couple of weeks leading up to a respective product launch (obviously this time around could be different, though)....

Apple has today announced that it will be bringing its coding curriculum to the Computer Science Education Week. Starting today, students can register for thousands of free Hour of Code sessions available at all Apple Store locations worldwide. The sessions will begin December 1st and run through 14th. Apple is also introducing today new Swift Coding Club materials that help educators teach coding outside the classroom. This curriculum is based on Apple’s own Swift programming language....

NBC is reporting that Apple will offer female employees up to $20,000 to cover the costs of freezing their eggs if they want to defer having children until later in their career, following the example of Facebook which recently introduced the same employee benefit. Fertility specialists advise that women who want to freeze eggs in order to have children later in life should freeze at least 20 eggs, which will typically take two rounds of treatment at a cost of $10,000 each....

Apple is preparing a significant expansion of its iPhone sales capabilities in its official retail stores, according to sources. Late in August, many Apple Stores in the United States will kick off a pilot program for customers to be able to purchase a new iPhone via the latest carrier upgrade programs: AT&T Next, T-Mobile JUMP, and Verizon Edge. Currently, iPhones bought at Apple Stores must either be purchased on a two-year deal, or at full-price (unlocked) with no contract…...

AirPlay, a proprietary protocol by Apple allowing for worry-free wireless streaming of audio, video, photos and related metadata between certified devices, is about to gain an enhanced support for the wireless Bluetooth standard via a new chip, Japanese blog Macotakara has learned. Apple apparently announced the new certification chip at a Shenzen, China conference organized for two thousand members of their MFI (Made For iPhone/iPad/iPod) program. The company is aiming to expand the market for wireless iOS accessories by a factor of seven by taking the IAP via Bluetooth (iPod Accessory Protocol) – first implemented in iOS 5 – to the Bluetooth 4....

While Apple has set a release date for Little America on Apple TV+ and also renewed the show for a second season, it has also signed a multi-year content creation deal with its showrunner and co-creator, Lee Eisenberg. Reported by Variety, Apple’s new deal with Eisenberg will see him create both new TV and digital media projects just for Apple TV+. Eisenberg has a rich resume including six Emmy nominations for his work on The Office and more....

Following a brief appearance on its website over the weekend, Apple announced major updates to its iLife apps for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and Mac. Eddy Cue took the stage today at debut new versions of iLife for iOS and OS X. Along with new icons, Cue demoed iPhoto for iPad. Photo Books can now be composed directly from iPad, a feature previously limited to the Mac. iMovie for iOS now includes “desktop class effects” like picture-in-picture....

Apple updated its “Cards” app for creating and sending physical greeting cards that originally launched in October of last year at the iPhone 4S unveiling. Included in version 1.1 of the iOS app are new letterpress cards for Mother’s Day, which are just in time for the holiday that is celebrated in most countries during April or May (May 13 in the United States this year). Other additions include “Get Well” cards, new designs for birthdays, thank yous, and other categories....

Apple today has updated its Clips application with a handful of new features and options for creatives. The update brings the app to version 2.0.4 and includes new soccer content ahead of next month’s FIFA World Cup… Apple touts that the update brings soccer graphics including an animated sticker, label, and poster with customizable text. Following the release of iOS 11 to the general public earlier today, Apple is now rolling out updated versions of Numbers, Pages, and Keynote for iOS. The updates bring support for new iOS 11 features, performance improvements, and more. Pages has been updated with a redesigned document manager that makes it easier to view files from third-party service providers and iCloud Drive. There’s also drag and drop support for iPad, allowing you to move text, images, and more between Pages and other applications....

The recently released Audible app for Apple Watch now lets users sync audiobooks to the Apple Watch for offline playback. This means you can sync audiobooks to the Apple Watch, and then play it back without the need of your iPhone. Of course, with just like every other watchOS 5 audio app, you’ll only be able to sync audiobooks and not stream them as there currently is no API for that yet....
